It’s difficult to get an idea of what all is going on at the site of the future Matagorda Regional Medical Center from a windshield view from Highway 35. So in order to keep the citizens of Matagorda County aware of the status of the construction on the new Matagorda Regional Medical Center J.T. Vaughn Construction will be providing periodic updates to the local community via the local newspaper and website

March 2008 Progress Report- By Lyndon Bartos, Vaughn Construction
The month of March saw the completion of several project milestones including site plumbing, site storm drainage, and the buildings foundation. The installation of the site utilities was wrapped up the first week of March. The foundation of the building, both drilled piers and grade beams, were completed the last week of March. Inside the footprint of the building, underground plumbing and electrical conduit are currently being installed in preparation for the first slab on grade placement. All five concrete pours for the slab on grade are scheduled to take place in April.

The vast majority of the work scheduled to place onsite in the month of April will be activities associated with the placement of the slab on grade, erection of the structural steel, and the installation of the roadways and parking lots. The slab on grade is scheduled to be completed during the month of April. With the completion of the slab on grade structural steel is scheduled to be delivered in the first half of May.

The month of April looks to be another month where more project milestones will be reached. Major changes in the site will be visible this month, even from Highway 35.

April 2008 Progress Report - By Lyndon Bartos, Vaughn Construction
The cooperation of Mother Nature and the completion of two slab on grade placements with one more completed, May 2nd has turned April into one of our best months yet. The pasture you once saw between Bay City High School and the Colorado River is well on its way to becoming your new Matagorda Regional Medical Center.

Foundation work completed this month included piers drilled for both light pole standards and cooling towers. The fourth and fifth slab on grade placements will be completed in May to make way for structural steel erection. You will see structural steel going up in the latter half of May.

Electrical work mainly consisted of installation of underground conduit both on the building pad as well as throughout the eleven acre site.

The City of Bay City has made its way around the building footprint installing the site paving and parking. The loop road that ties the North and West entrances together and circles the building is currently making its last leg around the building.

With the month of April behind us, strides are being made to ensure a timely delivery of steel, which is being fabricated by Bay City’s own Henderson Fabrication. By summer you should see your new hospital start to take shape with the steel erection and completion of the loop road. We will continue to bring you monthly updates, but soon progress will be visible from afar.

May 2008 Progress Report - By Lyndon Bartos, Vaughn Construction
The steel is here and your Matagorda Regional Medical Center is starting to take shape, literally. The steel erector showed up and hit the ground “hanging” making great progress allowing other work to take place soon thereafter. May turned out to be a month to where you could finally see the fruits of the labor being put in since January.

The last of the underground electrical conduit and plumbing was installed followed by the last three slab on grade placements, all completed on schedule. The City of Bay City is currently putting the finishing touches on the loop road around the hospital footprint allowing for easy access around the building pad.

June will not only bring the summertime heat, but also more new trades will be onsite. The framing of exterior walls, application of both fireproofing and the exterior vapor barrier will all be taking place in this month. The cooling towers for the air conditioning are set to hit the site mid month followed by parking lot light poles. The later part of June and first part of July will see the placement of concrete on the second floor and the completion of structural steel.

The building is starting to come together piece by piece and progress is being made every day to ensure the citizens of Matagorda are delivered a great hospital and you a new and improved workplace.

June 2008 Progress Report - By Lyndon Bartos, Vaughn Construction
The steel is “topped out” and many exciting activities are taking place on site to ensure the building dry in scheduled for the latter part of the year hits its scheduled deadline June brought to the site three major trades vital to the building dry in. Our drywall contractor, who is responsible for the exterior sheathing, which is the yellow panels you see going around the building. The fireproofer, who is currently applying the fireproofing to the steel and metal decking while waterproofing the exterior, which is the black membrane you see covering parts of the yellow panels. The mason is currently setting the CMU brick in the mechanical area. After completing the CMU they will then place the brick veneer that will later cover the entire hospital. The cooling towers located on the East side of the hospital were delivered and assembled this month while the installation of duct for the HVAC system has begun to hang in the mechanical and kitchen areas. The electrician has been hard at work installing the overhead conduit and our steel erector will be complete with detailing by the end of July. Second floor concrete will be placed within the next few weeks, while the exterior framing is set to be completed by the end of July which is to be quickly followed by window and door frames. Progress has continued this month and July will only add to the picture. June was another successful month of bringing Matagorda County a hospital that will bring quality care to its citizens for many years to come. A special thanks to all of the hospital administration and staff who showed up for the “Topping Out” Party on July 2nd, we had an enjoyable time and look forward to the next gathering. (Grand Opening)

July 2008 Progress Report - By Lyndon Bartos, Vaughn Construction
Your new Matagorda Regional Medical Center is now becoming more of a reality with 10 plus trades all working together to bring you a new workplace. The second floor concrete deck was complete this past month in two separate placements including the four sets of stairs and the helipad. The roofer found their way onsite the last week of July and will begin installing the TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) roofing system. Medical gas piping is being installed along with HVAC in multiple areas throughout the building while the boilers, water pumps and chillers are now set in the mechanical area. Exterior framing for the first floor is nearing completion and the second floor is currently underway. The brick mason completed CMU block walls around the cooling towers and is now laying brick on the North side of the hospital facing HWY 35 and will continue clockwise around the building. July brought sunny weather and much progress to the hospital this month. August will see installation of interior door and window frames and the delivery of exterior windows. A few louvers will be placed in August while continuing first floor interior framing. If the summer showers don’t hit too hard another month of progress will be on the horizon and one month closer to a new hospital for Matagorda County

August 2008 Progress Report - By Lyndon Bartos, Vaughn Construction
August has been a productive month here at the Matagorda Regional Medical Center jobsite and work is being done on both floors and in every part of the building in preparation for building dry-in. The City of Bay City completed the placement of concrete for the loading dock area allowing easier access for staging equipment inside the building. Our mason is continuing in a clockwise motion around the building installing the brick veneer while the fireproofers have completed the first floor and are currently applying the spray fireproofing to the second floor deck. The installation of punch windows started in August and will continue on into September assisting in the building dry-in process. Interior door and window frames are being set throughout areas A & B and following behind them is the sheet rock walls. The electricians have made headway as the switch gear was installed and electrical room build out will continue on into September. The fire pump has been delivered this month and the sprinkler fitters continued overhead sprinkler mains and piping in areas A & B. Medical Gas in wall piping is ongoing in areas A & B and holes are being cored for second story sanitary piping. Enthusiasm is high and great strides were made August. September proves to be another month of high activity focused on building dry in.
