Matagorda General Hospital's Rehab Center is committed to serving our community through a full continuum of care. We offer comprehensive rehabilitation such as Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy including Wound Care. Our team works closely with the physician to achieve the ultimate goal of helping the patient reach their highest potential of recovering. Hospitals are not subjected to the Medicare Cap. Therefore your treatment will not end until you have reached your rehabilitative potential.
Matagorda General Hospital offers outpatient rehab services Monday thru Friday. We strive to offer flexible schedules to accomodate patients' needs. If you are a patient at our hospital and you would benefit from rehab services, your doctor will order the appropriate services during your stay.
Our Services
Speech Therapy - A speech-language pathologist is the healthcare professional educated and trained to evalulate and treat speech, language, and cognitive communication problems as well as swallowing problems. Services are designed to help people develop effective communication skills and restore the highest level of function possible for each individual's communication and swallowing needs.
Occupational Therapy - The occupational therapist is the healthcare professional educated and trained to evaluate and treat orthopedic injuries, post-operative conditions and neurological conditions such as stroke. The occupational therapist's goal is to help an individual achieve maximum levels of functioning in performing activities of daily living.
Physical Therapy - A physical therapist is the healthcare professional educated and trained to evaluate and treat physical dysfuntion or injury by the use of therapeutic exercise and the application of modalities. A physical therapist's primary goal is to restore the highest level of function to each individual.
Wound Care - Physical Therapy also provides wound care for wounds with various etiologies such as diabetes, venous or arterial insufficiencies, infections, spider bites, slow or nonhealing sugical sites, failing skin grafts or trauma.
WHAT DISORDERS DO SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS TREAT?
- Aphasia - problems speaking and understanding, reading writing, telling time, and/or using numbers due to strokes, tumors, or brain injury.
- Apraxia/Dysarthria - difficulty planning muscle movements/weakness or incoordination of speech muscles making it difficult or impossible to understand.\
Cognitive - Communication disorders - problems of memory, reasoning, problem-solving, attention to task and awareness of surrounding resulting from damage to the brain, head injury, or dementia.
- Dysphagia (swallowing problems) - can lead to dehydration, malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, isolation and decreased quality of life resulting from stroke, neurological conditions, head and neck cancer, injury or surgery involving the head and neck, dementia, aging process and in some cases the causes are not known.
- Voice disorders - cause changes in pitch, loudness and vocal quality resulting from vocal nodules, polyps, or neurological disease/injury such as in Parkinson's.
- Fluency disorders - often referred to as stuttering.
- Speech Sound disorders - occur often in young children resulting in difficulty producing speech sounds beyond the age one would expect a child to learn it.
- Disorder's causing one to be non-verbal-SLP's assist patients in alternative or augmentative communication methods which may range from sign language, alphabet/picture boards or high-tech electronic devices that produce speech.
WHAT DISORDERS DO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS TREAT?
- Work-related injuries including repetitive strain injuries.
- Physical, cognitive or psychological limitations following a stroke, brain injury or heart attack.
- Rheumatoid and age-related conditions such as arthritis.
- Neurodegenerative movement disorders such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease.
- Burns, spinal cord injuries, or amputations.
- Fractures or other injuries from falls, sports injuries, or accidents.
- Visual, peceptual or cognitive impairments.
WHAT DISORDERS TO PHYSICAL THERAPISTS TREAT?
- Musculosketal disorders - injuries of the back, joints and repetitive strains in various areas.
- Orthopedic Surgeries - hip and knee joint replacements, fracture repairs, sports injuries, amputations and tendon repairs.
- Brain injuries, Cerebral palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, spinal cord injuries, stroke and geriatric disorders such as Alzheimer's.
Therapists work with patients to reduce pain, increase range of motion, strength, balance, ambulations and fuctional independence.
