The Legacy

Retirement Community

The Legacy Retirement Community is a full-service campus offering Independent and Assisted Living apartments, nursing home care, adult day care, wellness center memberships, and more. The Legacy is named as such to honor the legacy of the three generous ladies who made these facilities possible. Ms. Mignon Doman, Ms. Nora A. Freeman, and Ms. Olivia E. Phillips left trust funds to the Matagorda County Hospital District and specifically designated them for the care of the elderly and infirm.

The Matagorda House Healthcare Center is the first major contribution to the community from the trust funds. This 120-bed nursing home facility opened in May 1995. Matagorda House offers the latest in skilled nursing care, and includes a unit for the memory-impaired.

Assisted and Independent Living

The second phase of the Legacy Campus is the addition of both independent and assisted living services. Both services were constructed in 2000, and the Assisted Living Service received its first resident in November 2000. Occupancy for the Independent Living Apartments began in January 2001.

Assisted Living is ideal for those seniors who need monitored attention, but who aren't ready for the nursing home. The Assisted Living apartments are offered in both studio (efficiency) and one-bedroom floor-plans. The service includes 24-hour call availability, house-keeping service, three meals daily, membership to the Wellness Center, activities, and more. This option is a wonderful way to achieve the resident's desire for privacy while ensuring that assistance is only moments away if needed.

The Independent Living service offers one- and two-bedroom floor plans, washer/dryer in every unit, one meal daily, Wellness Center membership, activities, and the opportunity to purchase additional meal and housekeeping options. Independent Living is ideal for active seniors who no longer care for the chores associated with owning and maintaining a home. At the Legacy, these seniors can be among their peers and enjoy close relationships while maintaining full independence in their separate living quarters.
